Metabolic Syndrome Profile

The Metabolic Syndrome Profile is a blood panel that checks the group of markers linked to metabolic syndrome, including cholesterol, blood sugar control, insulin and inflammation. It suits anyone with risk factors such as central weight gain, high blood pressure, or a family history of type 2 diabetes or heart disease. The panel costs £388.75, plus a £50 blood-draw fee, with results back within 9 days. You can walk in or book online at 117a Harley Street, seven days a week, with no GP referral needed.

This profile is usually requested when someone has several risk factors together, such as weight carried around the waist, raised blood pressure, or a family history of type 2 diabetes or heart disease, rather than any single symptom.

It's also used to build a fuller picture for people who already know their cholesterol or blood sugar is borderline, since it adds insulin and inflammation markers that a routine check often leaves out.

Some people request it alongside lifestyle changes, such as starting a new diet or exercise programme, to get a broader baseline before they begin.

This profile includes fasting markers, so a fasting sample is required. Please do not eat for around 8 to 12 hours beforehand, water is fine, and clearly tell the clinic whether your sample is fasting or non-fasting when you attend, as the laboratory needs this stated. Follow any additional instruction from your doctor.

Taken together, a raised glucose or HbA1C, high insulin, a low adiponectin, and a raised high-sensitivity CRP build a pattern that can point towards insulin resistance or an increased metabolic risk, alongside whatever your lipid profile shows. No single marker on this panel gives you an answer on its own.

Your laboratory report will show the reference range for each marker. Because the results interact with each other and with factors like weight, activity and family history, they need a doctor to interpret them properly. Book a follow-up appointment to go through your results and discuss any lifestyle or treatment changes that might help.

If you want these markers alongside a doctor's examination and a wider health assessment, compare the Full Body MOT health check.

Next step

Do I need to fast for the Metabolic Syndrome Profile?

Yes. Please fast for around 8 to 12 hours beforehand, water only, and tell the clinic your fasting status when you attend, as some of the markers in this panel, including glucose and insulin, need to be measured fasting for an accurate result.

Why does this test take longer than others?

It includes several specialist markers, including insulin and adiponectin, which take longer to process than a routine panel. Results are typically back within 9 days.

What does a low adiponectin result mean?

Adiponectin usually falls as metabolic risk rises, so a lower result is generally the pattern of interest here, though it needs to be read alongside the rest of the profile and your history by a doctor.

Can this test diagnose metabolic syndrome?

The blood results alone do not give a diagnosis. Metabolic syndrome is usually defined using a combination of blood results, blood pressure and waist measurement, which is best assessed by a doctor.
